Film & Animation · Explainers · Event films

Films that make big ideas land.

Our filmmakers, animators and illustrators make explainer films, 2D and 3D animation, event films and interviews for leaders, learning teams and communicators — and plan each one into the campaign, event or program it serves.

Made by the studio that also scribes and designs — so a drawing from the workshop can become the film everyone sees.

Films for teams at Novartis, Oxford University Press and TechInsights.

Why it works

People will watch what they won’t read.

When people want to understand something, most reach for a short film first. Words and pictures together are how people learn — and film carries both, with a voice, in the order you choose.

Film is how a message gets chosen, understood and asked for again — even by people who’ve stopped listening.

Frame by frame

Drawn first. Then it moves.

Many of our films start life as a drawing, because the studio that animates them also scribes and designs. Here is one, frame by frame: the animated infographic we made for TechInsights.

  1. Frame 01The brief

The TechInsights name beside a drawn engineer, circuit lines and lab equipment

    Find the story

A semiconductor analysis company wanted its process understood by a wider audience.

One question: how does it work?

  2. Frame 02Draw it

The whole TechInsights process drawn as one gray and teal infographic, in four numbered steps

    Draw it whole

Our scribing team drew the whole process as one infographic first.

Everyone sees the story before a frame moves.

  3. Frame 03Script

Close on step one of the infographic: a woman thinking beside documents and video icons

    Write it deeper

Our writers expanded the script to go further into each core message.

    Close on step 1: identification.

  4. Frame 04Voice

Close on step two: a drawn engineer running to buy the latest laptops and phones

    Give it a voice

A recorded voiceover leads the eye from one step to the next.

    Move to step 2: acquisition.

  5. Frame 05Animate

Close on step three: a device taken apart into its layers, with magnified circuit details

    Move the camera

The camera travels through the drawing as each element comes to life.

Push in on step 3: analysis.

  6. Frame 06Launch

Close on step four: a woman at a screen of reverse-engineering reports

    Put it to work

The finished film became a key part of TechInsights’ digital marketing.

    End on step 4: content.

Illustrative: crops of the TechInsights infographic, laid out the way a storyboard plans the camera’s path through a drawing.

“They took highly technical concepts and turned them into an easy-to-follow story that enabled a deeper connection with our market.”

Where our films work

Planned into something bigger.

We plan each film with the event, campaign or learning program it serves — and often make the rest of it too.

Events & summits

Before, during and after the day.

Films that build the audience, open the room and keep the story going once everyone has gone home.

  • Before

Teasers and speaker films that make people want to be there.

  • On the day

Opening films, filmed interviews and live capture.

  • After

Highlights and recap films, cut for social and the intranet.

Novartis’s We Are Novartists films were showcased at the Eurovision Village in Basel, and have passed 40,000 YouTube views.

A hand-drawn explainer frame asking How will we support you?, with step one: engage business leaders

Learning & development

Films people take part in.

Short films for each module, and interactive video where people choose their own path through the material.

  • Leadership

Expert interviews cut into short, navigable chapters.

  • Onboarding

The welcome film every new starter actually watches.

  • Practice

Branching scenarios built with our games team.

For a global pharmaceutical organization we interviewed more than 50 leaders and experts; the host site became its most popular HR platform, with 8,000+ active users.

Change & internal comms

Show the change, don’t just announce it.

Real colleagues on camera, doing the thing the strategy asks for — so the message looks like the organization, not a press release.

  • Values

Behaviors filmed in practice, not explained in the abstract.

  • Leaders

Interviews that sound like people talking.

  • Inclusion

Personal stories, told direct to camera.

For Novartis, one day of filming colleagues playing a card-based game became a campaign across LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram.

Launches & marketing

Get the launch noticed, and understood.

An explainer for the idea, short cuts for every channel, and a series when one film isn’t enough.

  • The idea

An explainer that makes the offer clear.

  • The feed

Short films and cut-downs made for social.

  • The series

Episodes that add up to something people follow.

Our animated series for Oxford University Press’s American National Biography has passed 75,000 views.

Where we’re different

Filmmakers who speak business.

  1. 01

From the room to the screen

The same studio scribes the workshop, designs the picture and animates it — so the ideas from the room reach the people who weren’t in it, in a style they already recognize.

TechInsights: drawn by our scribing team, then animated by our animators.

  2. 02

    Part of a bigger plan

Most studios hand over a file. We plan the film with the campaign, event or learning journey it serves — the cut-downs, the toolkit, the game, the moment it launches.

Backed by the Ludic Group: Ludic Advisory for events and strategy, and the SmartLab event platform.

  3. 03

    Literate in science and strategy

Writers and directors who work in strategy and change, at home with hematology, semiconductors or a leadership model — accurate, without losing the story.

Films on hematology, semiconductor analysis and leadership development in our portfolio.

  4. 04

    Films people can play

Interactive, choose-your-path video built with our games team, for learning people take part in rather than sit through.

Interactive Learning Journey: 50+ leaders and experts interviewed; 8,000+ active users.

How we work

From the brief to the final cut.

You see the film on paper before anything is shot or drawn, and you review it at every stage after that — so there are no surprises at the end.

Questions

Good to know

How long should our film be?

As long as the story needs, and no longer. An explainer usually works best at around a minute and a half; social cuts are shorter; a learning program can be a series of short episodes. We recommend a length with the script.

Animation or live action?

Animation is best when the idea is abstract, the subject is hard to film or you’ll want to update it later. Live action is best when the story is about real people. Many of our films mix the two — our digital enablement film blended animation with screenshots of internal tools and colleagues’ own videos.

How long does a film take?

It depends on the format and how many review rounds you need. We agree a schedule at the start, built back from your launch or event date, with review points at the script, the storyboard and the edit.

Can you film outside the UK?

Yes. Our global network of business-literate creatives films wherever your people are — our Disability Equity series was filmed across Europe and the US, with local teams on each shoot.

Can you work within our brand?

Yes. We can build on your existing art style, as we did for a multinational’s digital enablement film, or create a look of its own for a campaign that needs to stand apart.

Can one film become many?

That is how we plan them: cut-downs for social, subtitled and translated versions, stills for posters and the intranet — and, with the rest of the studio, a scribed event, a campaign or a game built around the same story.

Tell us what people need to understand, and where they’ll watch it. We’ll find the story — and the right film to tell it.

What happens next

  1. Tell us the story

What you need people to see, understand or do — and who they are.

  2. We find the right team

A lead from our team reads it and brings in the scribes, designers, animators or game designers the brief needs.

  3. We talk it through

A short call about goals, audience, timings and budget, then a proposal with options.
